NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University women's track & field team geared up for the 2011 MEAC Indoor Championships in impressive fashion on Saturday, winning five event titles at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University at the Freeman Center.
Senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) won two of those events, taking the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 7.45 and the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.35.
Senior
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) won the weight throw with a distance of 16.89 meters, while junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 57.73 to win the 400-meter dash.
The Lady Pirates' 4x400-meter relay team won the gold medal with a 3:59.09.
Freshman
Breana Norman finished second in both the 60-meter dash (7.67) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.80), while freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) came in third in the mile run with a season-best 5:00.77.
Freshman
Emmy Fraenk ran a 57.76 in the 400-meter dash to finish second, while freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) came in third with a 58.75. Freshman
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran a 19:11.47 in the 5,000-meter run to come in fifth.
Senior
Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) threw the shot put 12.21 meters to finish fourth, while junior
DeShana Briggs (Norfolk, Va.) jumped 1.62 meters in the high jump to come in fifth.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Thursday through Saturday, when they head to Landover, Md. to compete in the 2011 MEAC Indoor Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
