NEW YORK, N.Y. – Hampton University senior
Damon Dixon and junior
Claudia Calder each won an event title at the Armory New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Armory Track & Field Center.
Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) jumped a season-best 2.09 meters to take the men's Eastern high jump event, while
Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) won the women's college high jump event at a season-best height of 1.78 meters.
On the Pirates' end, junior
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 6.65 in the 60-meter dash championship race to finish second – after posting the top preliminary time with a 6.64. He also helped the 4x200-meter relay team – along with senior
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.),
Damon Dixon and freshman
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) – finish fifth with a 1:28.02.
Freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) ran a 56.54 in the college 400-meter dash race to come in fifth, while also helping the 4x800-meter relay team – along with junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) and freshman
Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) – finish sixth in the championship race with a 9:09.34.
The Pirates finished 15th in the team standing with 17 points. LSU scored 97 points to win the men's team championship by 17 points over Texas A&M.
Senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) ran an 8.31 in the 60-meter hurdles championship race to finish eighth, while jumping 5.59 meters in the long jump championship to finish 15th.
Tate ran a 2:14.88 to finish 12th in the college 800-meter run.
The Lady Pirates scored four points to finish in a tie for 26th with Delaware, Morgan State and UTEP. BYU scored 90.5 points to win the women's title, by 5.5 points over LSU.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Feb. 17-19, when they head to Landover, Md. for the 2011 MEAC Indoor Championships.
