CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Hampton University women's track & field team had a strong showing on Friday and Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational at the Irwin Belk Complex, with many of the team's freshmen turning in strong performances.
Due to inclement weather on Saturday, the 5,000-meter run, 4x400-meter relay and the men's 200-meter dash were canceled.
Freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) turned in the best individual performance of the weekend, running a season-best 2:12.38 in the 800-meter run to take the gold. Junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 2:12.88 to finish second, while freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) came in fourth with a 2:14.54.

Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) ran a 4:53.07 in the 1,500-meter run to come in second.

Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran a 12.02 to finish third in the 100-meter dash, while also running a 24.44 to finish fourth in the 200-meter dash and jumping 1.62 meters to tie for fourth in the high jump.

Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.) ran a 55.75 in the 400-meter dash to finish third, while freshman
Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) came in third in the long jump with a distance of 5.72 meters.
Fraenk also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a 24.65.
Freshman
Maressa Pinnock (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a 1:04.47 in the 400-meter hurdles to come in eighth, while freshman
Taylor Butler (Oxon Hill, Md.) jumped 5.36 meters to finish eighth in the long jump.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. for the International Freedom & Friendship Games.
The Pirates will be back in action Wednesday through Saturday, when they head to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Sea Ray Relays.
