TOLEDO, Ohio – The Hampton University women's basketball team got back into the win column on Friday afternoon, beating Evansville 64-45 at Savage Arena in the consolation game of the inaugural Toledo Invite.
The Lady Pirates (8-4) had three players in double figures, led by sophomore guard
Kenia Cole (Burtonsville, Md.), who had 16 points on 6-for-15 shooting. Senior guard
JoNiquia Guilford (Chesapeake, Va.) came off the bench to pour in 14 points and grab a team-high six rebounds.

Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 10 points to go along with six assists. Senior forward
Ariel Phelps (Virginia Beach, Va.) also had six rebounds.
Hamilton was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Evansville led 7-2 with 16:37 left in the first half after a pair of free throws from Mallory Ladd, but the Lady Pirates responded by going on an 11-2 run to take a 13-9 lead at the 9:35 mark after a 3-pointer from Cole.
Ladd hit two free throws with 8:41 left in the half to tie the game at 13-13, but a 12-0 Hampton run gave the Lady Pirates a 25-13 lead at the 6:02 mark after a Hamilton layup.
From there, the Purple Aces got no closer than within five, cutting Hampton's lead to 27-22 at the 3:18 mark after a Ladd jumper. Cole hit a trey with 38 seconds left in the half to give Hampton a 32-22 lead, capping a 5-0 spurt.
Hampton led 32-24 at the half. Cole had 12 points at the break.
The Lady Pirates broke the game open in the second half, opening the frame on an 11-2 run to take a 43-26 lead at the 14:09 mark after a pair of free throws from junior forward

The Purple Aces then went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 45-36 with 10:29 to play, before the Lady Pirates went on another 11-2 run to take a 56-38 lead at the 7:53 mark after a 3-pointer from freshman guard

Juliann Miller hit a trey at the 7:29 mark for the Purple Aces, cutting Hampton's lead to 56-41, but from that point on, Evansville hit just one field goal the rest of the game – a jumper from Samantha Heck with 37 seconds left.
As Evansville managed just four points over the last 7:29, the Lady Pirates led by as many as 23 – going up 64-41 with 4:25 to play after a layup from Phelps.
The Lady Pirates shot 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the floor, hitting six of their 21 3-pointers and going 6-for-8 (75 percent) from the free throw line. Hampton also scored 28 points off of 27 Evansville turnovers.
Hampton also held a 24-16 edge in bench scoring, a 12-0 advantage on the fast break, and a 30-18 edge in the paint.
Evansville (2-9) shot 31.3 percent (15-for-48) from the floor and hit just four of its 20 3-pointers. The Purple Aces out-rebounded Hampton 41-32.
Heck led Evansville with 12 points, while Ladd added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
