STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Hampton University women's golf team finished third in the Women in Golf Invitational, which was held April 27-29 at the Stone Mountain Golf Course, thanks to three golfers in the top 10.
The Lady Pirates shot a two-day 677 (340-337), finishing 12 strokes behind second-place South Carolina State. Bethune-Cookman won the team championship with a two-day score of 663 (333-330).
Junior
Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) turned in the Lady Pirates' top finish, coming in a tie for fourth after shooting an 18-over 162 (76-86). Her first-round 76 was the team's low round of the tournament, and it was the low for the first round overall, leaving her as the leader heading into the second round.
Junior
Kayla Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) fired a 19-over 163 (82-81) to come in sixth, while senior
Dionne West (Springdale, Md.) came in 10th with a 26-over 170 (88-82).
Sophomore
Maria Stewart (Newport News, Va.) fired a 38-over 182 (94-88) to come in a tie for 19th, while freshman Mikea Grandberry was 24th with a 50-over 194 (95-99).
South Carolina State's Cheryl Chua and Bethune-Cookman's Patrizia Tervisan wound up tied atop the individual leaderboard at 16-over. Tervisan won the individual title with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
The Lady Pirates will close the 2011-12 season on May 10-13, when they travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla. to compete in the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship.
