LADY PIRATES WIN NINTH MEAC OUTDOOR TITLE

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Hampton University women's track & field team won the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

The Lady Pirates won their ninth overall MEAC outdoor title and their sixth in the last seven years, tallying 136 points, 30 points clear of second-place Maryland Eastern Shore.

The Pirates finished fifth in the men's standings with 59 points.

For the eighth time in his career, Lady Pirates head coach Maurice Pierce was named the meet's Most Outstanding Coach.

“It feels good to win another championship,” Pierce said. “My assistant coaches and athletes did a great job. It wasn't our best performance, but at the end of the day, we scored the most points so I'm excited to win.”

Sophomore Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the women's 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.49. Norman also finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.72 meters, and third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.66.

Senior Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) won the women's heptathlon as the Lady Pirates swept the top four spots. Calder tallied 4,748 points, winning the high jump, 200-meter dash and 800-meter run. Junior Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.), who finished second in the heptathlon with 4,623 points, won the javelin throw.

Senior Ermesha Fair (Chesapeake, Va.) came in third with 4,435 points, while junior Shantae Boney (District Heights, Md.) came in fourth with 4,275 points.

Sophomore Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) came in third in the high jump at 1.69 meters, while also coming in third in the long jump at 5.81 meters.

The Lady Pirates came in second in the 4x400-meter relay, as senior Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.), sophomore Malekah Holland (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Cassandra Jones (Norfolk, Va.) recorded a time of 3:37.71.

Taylor also finished second in the 800-meter run with a school-record 2:07.64. Sophomore Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) set a school record in the 1,500-meter run, coming in second after running a 4:36.50.

Sophomore Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran an 18:47.60 to come in third in the 5,000-meter run.

Senior Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) took the men's 100-meter dash title after running a 10.44.

Freshman Javan Gray (Springfield, Ore.) also set a new school record in the javelin throw, coming in second with a mark of 60.90 meters. Stefano Nardini came in third with a mark of 60.33 meters.

Senior Devan Clark (Lorton, Va.) came in third in the discus with a school-record mark of 46.94 meters.

The top three finishers in each event earned All-MEAC honors.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Princeton, N.J. for the IC4A and ECAC Outdoor Championships.
