TRACK STANDOUT LEWIS CHOSEN FOR MEAC HALL OF FAME

NORFOLK, Va. – Former Hampton University track & field standout Yvette Lewis will be inducted into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2013, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Lewis, a native of Newport News, Va., was a two-time NCAA champion during her collegiate career, winning the 2006 indoor triple jump title before winning the same event in the 2007 outdoor season. They were the first track & field national championships in Hampton Div. I history.

She was a four-time All-American, as named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and Lewis currently holds 10 school records – five for indoor competition and five for outdoor.

Lewis' success was a major part of the Lady Pirates' growth into a MEAC power; in 2007, she won MEAC championships in the indoor 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump; as well as the outdoor 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and triple jump.

In 2006, Lewis was a MEAC indoor champion in the 200-meter dash, triple jump, and pentathlon, while also taking MEAC crowns in the outdoor 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and triple jump.

She holds MEAC records in the indoor high jump (1.78 meters; five feet, 10 inches in 2006) and the outdoor triple jump (13.34 meters; 43 feet, 9.25 inches in 2007). She also set MEAC marks for most individual points in a meet in the 2006 MEAC Indoor Championships (48), and the 2006 MEAC Outdoor Championships (58).

Since graduating from Hampton in 2007, Lewis has established herself as one of the world's top hurdlers and jumpers. In 2011, she won a gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, while also taking home a silver medal as part of the 4x100-meter relay team.

Lewis, who also competed in the Pan Americans Games in 2007, finished 2011 ranked No. 8 in the world in the 100-meter hurdles. Her personal best mark in the triple jump came in 2008, when Lewis jumped 13.84 meters. She set a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles in 2011, running a 12.76.

Her personal best in the indoor 60-meter hurdles came in 2010, when she ran a 7.90.

Lewis currently serves as assistant track & field coach at Hampton.

Joining Lewis in the MEAC Hall of Fame Class of 2013 will be South Carolina State football great John Alford, North Carolina Central football standout Louis Breeden, former Maryland Eastern Shore bowling coach Sharon Brummell, and former Howard football coach Steve Wilson.

The 2013 class will be inducted on Friday, March 15, during a brunch at the Norfolk Waterside Hotel. The class will also be recognized during the 2013 MEAC Basketball Tournament, which will be held at Norfolk Scope March 11-16.

”I'd like to applaud the 2013 Hall of Fame class for all of their accomplishments both athletically and professionally,” MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas said. “They have made significant contributions to their communities, institutions and the conference.”

Tickets for the induction brunch are $35 per seat or $300 per table (10 persons). Tickets can be purchased by calling the MEAC office at (757) 951-2055.

The MEAC Hall of Fame highlights former student-athletes, coaches, university and/or conference administrators as well as special contributors, who have enriched the legacy of the conference since its inception in 1970.

Enshrinees were selected by a 13-person committee made up of administrators and representatives from member institutions.
