NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University football team landed three players on the All-MEAC First Team, as the conference office released its 2013 All-Conference Teams on Friday.
The teams were voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Sophomore defensive lineman Miles Grooms (Richmond, Va.) was named First Team All-MEAC, as were senior defensive back Justin Blake (Piscataway, N.J.) and freshman kicker Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.).
Grooms tied for second in the MEAC in both sacks and tackles for loss this season, totaling 9.5 sacks (0.79 per game) and 18.5 tackles for a loss of 88 yards. He had 3.5 sacks against Delaware State, and he recorded 3.0 tackles for loss at Bethune-Cookman.
He was also sixth on the team this season with 57 tackles.
Blake led the Pirates with four interceptions this season, while also ranking fourth on the team with 103 total tackles. He had five pass breakups and recovered two fumbles. Blake recorded an interception in each of his last three games.
Prevost led the MEAC in field goals this season, making 17 of his 19 attempts. His season long of 43 yards came at South Carolina State, and he also hit a 42-yard field goal against North Carolina Central.
Junior offensive lineman Kory Alpichi (Winchester, Calif.) was one of four Pirates named Second Team All-MEAC, along with senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.), senior defensive back Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.), and freshman punter Christian Faber-Kinney (Williamsburg, Va.).
Alpichi started all 11 games on the Pirates offensive line, taking part in a unit that helped Hampton rush for 153.4 yards per game – the sixth-best average in the MEAC.
Tyler led the Pirates and was second in the MEAC in tackles this season with 131 (57 solo) – averaging 11.9 per game. He ended his career with the Pirates second on the all-time career tackles list, with 383 (six shy of tying Gareth Bonds' all-time mark).
Johnson was tied for fourth in the MEAC in tackles with 122 (including 72 solo stops), and he was tied for second on the team with three interceptions. He also had six pass breakups.
Faber-Kinney was second in the MEAC in punting this season, averaging 41.6 yards per kick. He also successfully executed a pair of fake punts – one pass and one run – at South Carolina State, earning MEAC and FCS Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Senior Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) was named Third Team All-MEAC. He ranked third in the MEAC in receptions per games this season with 4.1, and his 45.0 receiving yards per game were the sixth-best average in the conference.
He was also fifth in the MEAC with 97.2 all-purpose yards per game.
Greg McGhee of Howard was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Joe Thomas of South Carolina State was the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Tristan Bellamy, also of South Carolina State, was named MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, and Tariq Cohen of North Carolina A&T was named Rookie of the Year.
Brian Jenkins of Bethune-Cookman was named MEAC Coach of the Year.
