ATLANTA, Ga. – The Hampton University women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Monday, as Georgia Tech used a strong second half to win 89-70 in the championship game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Tournament in McCamish Pavilion.
Freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led four Lady Pirates in double figures with 27 points, earning All-Tournament honors, while senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points – 10 in the first half – and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) chipped in 11 points.
Cole was also named All-Tournament.
A Bennett jumper with 17:54 left in the first half gave the Lady Pirates a 10-4 lead, before Georgia Tech went on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 14-14 at the 11:48 mark after a jumper from Tyaunna Marshall. Cole and Tate-DeFreitas each hit a trey after that, putting the Lady Pirates up 20-14 with 10:23 left.
Tate-DeFreitas added a jumper with 6:04 left in the half to put the Lady Pirates up 31-23, and Hamilton hit two free throws with 5:02 left in the half to give Hampton a 33-25 lead.
Bu Georgia Tech closed the half on an 11-3 run, tying the game at 36-36 at the break.
Tate-DeFreitas had 13 points at the half.
The early minutes of the second half were a back-and-forth affair, with four ties and seven lead changes. Tate-DeFreitas gave the Lady Pirates a 48-47 lead with two free throws at the 13:56 mark, and her layup with 13:02 to play put Hampton up 50-49.
Sophomore forward
Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.) hit a layup to tie the game at 52-52 with 12:33 left in the second half, but Georgia Tech scored 21 of the next 23 points to take a 73-54 lead with 6:51 to play.
From that point, the Lady Pirates could get no closer than within 14, when Cole hit a 3-pointer to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to 75-61 with 5:47 left to play. Georgia Tech held control from there, and its largest lead of the game came with 1:04 left, when the Yellow Jackets led 89-68.
The Lady Pirates (10-4) shot 33.8 percent (22-for-65) from the floor and hit seven of their 16 3-pointers (43.8 percent). Georgia Tech shot 43.8 percent (28-for-64) from the floor and out-rebounded Hampton 45-40.
Marshall led the Yellow Jackets (10-3) with 22 points, while Kaela Davis added 19 points.
