BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Hampton University women's basketball team appeared to be on its way to its first win of the season Tuesday morning in Stabler Arena, but Lehigh used a late second-half push to emerge with an 85-67 win.
The Lady Pirates fell to 0-5 on the season.
Senior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) led three Lady Pirates in double figures with a season-high 22 points to go along with five assists, going 7-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFretias (Harrisburg, Pa.) added 17 points, four assists, and five steals.
Junior guard
Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) added 10 points and five rebounds.
Redshirt junior forward
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 30.5 percent (25-for-82) from the floor and made eight of their 28 3-pointers (28.6 percent). Hampton also went 9-for-12 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line, and the Lady Pirates turned 26 Lehigh turnovers into 20 points.
Lehigh led for much of the opening minutes of the first half, before a jumper by Tate-DeFreitas at the 9:15 mark tied the game at 20-20. She added a fastbreak layup seven seconds later to give the Lady Pirates a 22-20 lead.
Lehigh went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 25-22 lead, and a Quinci Mann layup with 5:30 left in the half put the Mountain Hawks up 31-25. But the Lady Pirates went on a 9-3 run, tying the game at 34-34 at t he 1:43 mark after a trey from Cole.
A 3-pointer from senior guard
Jackie Marshall (Hackensack, N.J.) with 48 seconds left in the half sent the Lady Pirates into the locker room with a 37-35 lead – their first halftime lead of the season.
Hampton opened the second half on a 7-2 run, taking a 44-39 lead with 17:42 left after a 3-pointer from Cole. Lehigh answered with seven straight points to take a 46-44 lead, but the Lady Pirates later took a 51-50 lead at the 12:55 mark on a trey from Tate-DeFreitas.
Another Cole 3-pointer at the 12:21 mark gave Hampton a 54-52 lead. Cole then hit a free throw with 11:40 left to play to give the Lady Pirates a 55-52 lead.
Lehigh answered with an 11-0 run, taking a 63-55 lead with 6:20 left after a pair of Lexi Martins free throws. A trey from Marshall at the 5:57 mark cut the lead to 63-58, but that was as close as the Lady Pirates would get the rest of the game.
The Mountain Hawks scored the next 17 points – including 10 straight from the free throw line – in taking an 80-58 lead with 2:16 remaining.
Kerry Kinek hit two free throws with 1:39 left to put Lehigh up 83-61.
Lehigh shot 22-for-29 (75.9 percent) from the free throw line in the second half.
Lehigh (6-0) shot 52.0 percent (26-for-50) from the floor and held a 50-35 edge in rebounding. The Mountain Hawks were also 30-for-43 (69.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Kinek led Lehigh with 22 points.
