LOVETT TO BE INDUCTED INTO CIAA HALL OF FAME

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dr. Walter Lovett, who served as head football coach and Director of Athletics at Hampton University for several years in the 1970s and 80s, will be inducted into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) John B. McLendon Jr. Hall of Fame on Friday.

Lovett will join a class of seven members to be inducted Friday morning at the Hall of Fame Breakfast in the Charlotte Convention Center.

"We are pleased to honor these individuals for their outstanding accomplishments as head coaches, former student-athletes, and administrators," said Jacqie Carpenter, Commissioner of the CIAA.

Lovett's coaching career began at Virginia State, where he served as an assistant coach from 1964-69. He became that school's head coach in 1970. During his three years at the helm at Virginia State, Lovett won two CIAA titles (1970, '72) and he was named the 1970 CIAA Coach of the Year.

He was also a two-time NAIA Coach of the Year (1971-72).

Lovett joined the Pirates in 1974, and after going 3-7 in his first season, Lovett improved to 5-5 in 1975. He led the Pirates to back-to-back 7-4 records in 1976 and 1977 – marking the first time since 1958 that Hampton had won that many games in a season.

The Pirates went 35-40 in his tenure.

Lovett also served as Director of Athletics during his tenure at Hampton, and he was briefly the chair of the Physical Education department.

Joining Lovett in the 2014 class will be former St. Augustine's basketball standout Anthony Boggan, longtime St. Augustine's golf coach Lawrence Coleman, Virginia State two-sport star Harold Deane, and track & field legend Clifton Huff.

Two other inductees have Hampton ties: Johnson C. Smith head basketball coach Stephen Joyner Sr. (uncle to current Hampton men's basketball coach Edward Joyner Jr.) and former CIAA Commissioner Bob Moorman (who briefly attended Hampton in the 1940s).
