PETERSBURG, Va. – Britney Smith again shined as the Hampton University men's and women's golf teams competed in the Virginia State Trojan Fall Classic this past Monday and Tuesday at the Dogwood Trace Golf Course.
Smith carded a 9-over 153 (75-78) in the two-day event, posting the top individual score on the women's side in helping the Lady Pirates defeat Chowan in the team standings. It marked the second straight tournament in which Smith won the individual title.
The Lady Pirates went 342-319 (660) during the tournament.
Of the six rounds Smith has played so far this season, four of them have been in the 70s.
JiHyun Park was third overall after posting a 20-over 164 (83-81), and her second-round 81 was a season best. Park and Smith were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Treliah Samuels shot a 23-over 167 (86-81) to come in fourth overall, while
Zora Moore was sixth in the individual standings with a 33-over 177 (95-82).
Milan James was eighth with a 44-over 188 (97-91).
On the men's side, the Pirates finished seventh overall with a two-day score of 666 (337-329). Randolph-Macon posted the best team score with a 603 (307-296).
T.J. O'Neal led the Pirates, carding a 16-over 160 (83-77) to finish tied for 18th. His second-round 77 was the team's best round of the tournament, and O'Neal has shot in the 70s or better in three of his five rounds so far this season.
Kenny Gaither shot a 20-over 164 (83-81) to come in tied for 23rd, while
Brandon Reed was 36th with a 27-over 171 (86-85).
Dawson Hobbs posted a 33-over 177 (85-92) to wind up tied for 38th.
Arthur Davis also tied for 38th with a 177, going 91-86.
Randolph-Macon's Connor Jones and Maryland Eastern Shore's Norman Blanco tied atop the men's individual leaderboard with matching 6-over 150s; Jones went 75-75, while Blanco shot 76-74.
