SOFTBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE TO MORGAN STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team dropped its series finale against Morgan State on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, falling 8-2.
 
The Lady Pirates are now 9-15 overall and 2-1 in MEAC play.
 
Hampton struck first in the bottom of the first inning; after junior Danielle Budden and freshman Hope Sobelewski both singled, senior Taylor McCoy singled up the middle bring home Budden and give the Lady Pirates a 1-0 lead.
 
Morgan State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a home run from Kimberly Fontaine, before an RBI single from Stormy Zyzyk gave the Bears (5-16, 1-2 MEAC) a 2-1 lead.
 
Walks to junior Kayla DeSchepper and freshman Ashley Grassini opened up the bottom of the second inning, and DeSchepper later scored when sophomore Lorena Alvarez reached on an error to tie the game at 2-2.
 
But the Bears added three runs in the top of the third – including a two-run single from Danielle Pitpit – to take a 5-2 lead. Morgan State also scored three times in the top of the fifth, including a triple from Pitpit, to open up an 8-2 lead.
 
Sobelewski and Budden each had two hits for the Lady Pirates.
 
Freshman Allie Hotetz struck out four in 6.2 innings of work.
