NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton University guards
Quinton Chievous and
Reginald Johnson, Jr. were both named First Team All-MEAC, as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its All-MEAC teams and postseason awards on Friday.
Chievous led the MEAC and ranked 10
th in the nation in rebounding (11.2 per game) and ranked third in the conference in scoring (17.3 points per game) this season. He was also second in the conference and 41
st in the nation in field goal percentage (.570), and he led the MEAC in both offensive and defensive rebounds.
He had 11 double-doubles on the season, including five in his last six games, and Chievous dropped a career-high 29 points twice this season: at Winthrop on Nov. 14 and against Delaware State on Feb. 29. His career high in rebounds, 23, also came in the Winthrop contest.
Chievous, a two-time MEAC Player of the Week and one-time MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, shot a season-best 13-for-17 (.570) against Delaware State.
Chievous was a Preseason First Team All-MEAC selection coming into the season.
Johnson was second in the MEAC in scoring, averaging a team-high 18.7 points per game – and that average went up to 20.9 points per game in conference play. He was also third in the MEAC in steals (2.0 per game) and seventh in the MEAC in assists, averaging 3.7 per game.
He was also eighth in the MEAC in assist-turnover ratio (1.4).
Johnson has scored in double figures 24 times this season – including 17 of the last 18 games – and he dropped a career-high 35 points in a double-overtime win at Northern Arizona back on Dec. 2. He also had 30 points against Washington Adventist on Feb. 2, and he dished out a career-high eight assists against Morgan State on Feb. 15.
He was named MEAC Player of the Week on Jan. 18.
Howard's James Daniel III was named MEAC Player of the Year, while Delaware State's Devin Morgan earned Rookie of the Year honors and Bethune-Cookman's LaRon Smith was named Defensive Player of the Year.
South Carolina State's Murray Garvin was named MEAC Coach of the Year.
The All-MEAC teams and postseason awards were voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
