HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's tennis team put up a hard fight against eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division champion Morgan State but lost a tough 4-3 match on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season.
Hampton (6-14/3-2) earned the third-seed from the north into next week's MEAC Championships. They will face the second seed from the south Florida A&M starting approximately 4pm on Thursday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University.
In doubles, the Bears took the first two spots to earn the team point. Hampton won at number three as
Charles Hudson and
Miguel Suarez defeated Felix Andre and Lucas Krusinski 6-2.
In singles, the teams split six matches as Morgan State escaped with the victory. Hampton University won at the top spot behind
Matthew Foster-Estwick scoring a 6-4, 7-6 win over Treajh Ferguson.
Peter Odegbami knocked off Andre at number three 6-3, 6-0, while
Joshua McQueen defeated Sagar Sathyanarayan 6-1, 6-3 at number six singles.
Hampton will now turn its attention to the MEAC Championships, where they'll face the Rattlers of Florida A&M on Thursday starting around 4 p.m. These teams met in Orlando, Fla. on March 6 as the Rattlers won 5-2 with the Pirates taking wins by Foster-Estwick and
Miguel Suarez in singles.
