IN BRIEF: A wild Battle of the Bay with 13 ties and 10 lead changes saw the host Spartans score a 94-89 double overtime win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Norfolk State jumped out to its largest lead of the game as a Mastadi Pitt free throw put the hosts up 28-13 with 7:29 left in the half. That free throw capped a 17-3 run by NSU.
- Hampton chopped that to eight on a pair of Jermaine Marrow free throws with 2:58 left in the half for a 32-24 deficit. A pair of Austin Colbert free throws with five seconds left in the half put the Pirates down 40-30 at intermission.
- A pair of Alex Long jumpers in the first 40 seconds helped push NSU up 44-31 at the 19:19 mark. They still held a double digit lead after a Steven Whitley layup with 17:39 left for a 46-35 advantage. Hampton scored the next 15 points as Marrow got uncorked scoring eight straight in that run. A three-pointer from Lysander Bracey gave Hampton its first lead at 48-46 at the 14:55 mark. Marrow capped the run with a jumper to put Hampton up 50-46 with 13:31 left.
- NSU regained control and held a 67-60 lead with 91 seconds left, but Hampton answered with a three-pointer from Greg Heckstall, three free throws from Bracey with 48 seconds left trimmed the lead to 69-66 and then Bracey double clutched a 3-ball with 20 seconds left forcing overtime at 69-all.
- In the first overtime, Hampton held a two-point lead with a minute left on a Heckstall layup, but free throws from Steven Whitley and Nic Thomas put the hosts back up 78-77 with 33 seconds. Kalin Fisher hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to force double overtime at 78-all.
- The second overtime saw Hampton get within one on several occasions, the last being on a 3-point play by Heckstall with 30 seconds left at 90-89. That wound up the last points for Hampton as Thomas and Pitt hit a pair of free throws each to ice the win.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- In over 130 all-time meetings, this was the second double overtime game and the first since 1995.
- Fisher topped five in double figures for Hampton with 26 points. Heckstall and Marrow added 17 each, while Bracey had 11 and Akim Mitchell chipped in 10 and a team-high eight rebounds.
- Thomas topped NSU with 25 and Whitley went for 20 and nine boards.
