LANDOVER, MD. – The Hampton University indoor track and field teams open competition in the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships on Thursday as the Lady Pirates sit in first and the men sit third after day one of three.
In the women's 5000 meters, sophomore
Janet Okeago took second in 17:51.65, while freshman Eusila Chepekemei was third in 18:10.32 to give the Lady Pirates 14 points. Both Okeago and Chepkemei took home All-MEAC honors.Â
Jaelen Leonard gave Hampton its final five points on day one with a fourth place finish in the long jump going 5.82m (19-1.25) to earn All-MEAC honors.
Junior
Emmanuel Too took fourth in the men's 500 meters running 15:16.74 to earn five points and All-MEAC honors.  Â
Fellow junior
Jerrick Powell also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 7.14m (23-5.25) for five points and All-MEAC honors.
For the men,
Moffat Wanjiru qualified seventh in the 200 meters running 21.95. In the heptathlon, Hampton won the long jump with Powell (22-7), high jump with
Desmond Lindsey (6-5), and 60 meter dash with
Trey Clark (7.01).
The Lady Pirates lead Bethune-Cookman (16), Florida A&M (15) and N.C. A&T (14) after day one. The men trail Florida A&M (18), Morgan State (11) and are tied with Norfolk State (10) in third. Competition continues on Friday morning in Landover, Md. at the Prince Georges Learning Complex.
