MEN'S TRACK CAPTURES BIG SOUTH TITLE

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Hampton University men's indoor track and field team came back after a fourth-place standing following day one of the 2019 Big South Conference Championship to win the team title scoring 169 points.

Campbell finished a close second with 160 points, while High Point stood third with 130 points. Charleston Southern finished the meet with 110 points, followed by USC Upstate in fifth with 36 points. Winthrop is in sixth with 32 points and UNC Asheville finished in seventh with 21 points.
 
The championship was the first one for Hampton as members of the Big South and also became only the second school in the history of the conference to win the title on the men's side.  Liberty had won the previous titles from 1999-2018.
 
After the mile run, Hampton got on the scoreboard taking four of the top seven spots in the 60 hurdles to earn 22 points.  Dylan Beard won the event in 7.95 with Charles Graham taking third (8.06) and Jaelen Williams in fourth (8.16) while Jerrick Powell took seventh in 8.48.
 
In the 400 meters, Hampton put up 27 points as Williams won the event in 47.92 to edge out Powell who ran 47.95.  Moffat Wanjiru took fourth in 49.26 and Derrick Price was fifth in 49.37.  Beard added a fifth in the 60 meters for four points running 6.99.
 
The 800 meters saw Hampton put up 16 points with Tayvon Burris winning in 1:52.49 and Geoffrey McCullough taking third in 1:54.08.  The Pirates got 25 points in the 200 meters as four Pirates finished in the top seven with Wanjiru winning in 21.60 to edge out Powell (21.63).  Douglas Sessoms took fourth in 21.9 and Price ran 22.22 for seventh place.
 
In the heptathlon, Hampton went 3-4-5 behind Trey Clark taking third (4,557 points), Jordan Walker in fourth (4,338) and Isaiah Norris in fifth (4.231).
 
The field events on Saturday saw Hampton take three spots in the high jump as Powell was third in 1.95 meters, Walker was fifth in 1.90 meters and Williams was in seventh in 1.90 meters.  Powell (13.87 meters) and Williams (13.67) took fifth and seventh respectively in the triple jump.
 
Joshua Hunter took third in the weight throw with a school record toss of 17.21 meters and Nicholas Edwards grabbed seventh in 15.56 meters.
 
In the 4x400 relay, Price, Wanjiru, Powell and Williams ran 3:16.08 to take the title in the final event of the day.
 
This marks the fifth conference indoor track and field championship for Hampton as the Pirates won the MEAC in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2014.  Head coach Maurice Pierce was named Coach of the Year for the second time in his career for the men.  Powell, who accounted for 34 points and earned five medals in the meet, was named Field Performer of the Meet.  Geoffrey McCullough was named to the Big South All-Academic team at the conclusion of the meet.
