NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors announced their 2018-19 Women's Basketball University Division All-State team and more honors were bestowed to the Hampton Lady Pirates.

Junior Ashley Bates was named the VaSID Player of the Year and was named to the first team, while freshman Laren VanArsdale was named the VaSID Rookie of the Year and named to the second team.

Bates is the first Hampton player to be named VaSID Player of the Year in at least the last 15 years, while VanArsdale is the second Hampton player in the last 15 years to be named Rookie of the Year after Malia Tate-DeFreitas won the honor in 2014.

For Bates, she helped lead the Lady Pirates to an overall 16-14 and 12-6 Big South conference record this season. She was named to the first team All-Conference along with being named the Conference Player of the Year as well as Defensive Player of the Year. Bates finished as the leading scorer in the Big South with 17.4 point per game as well as 4.3 steal per game and finished seventh in field goal percentage. Defensively, her 125 steals are a Big South single-season record and was third-most in NCAA Division I this year. 

VanArsdale (Powder Springs, Ga.) leads all Big South freshmen in scoring at 15.7 (fourth overall), and has made a league-best 136 free throws.  Her 79.1 free throw clip is seventh in the conference, and she also ranks eighth in steals (2.0), 10th in assists (3.0) and is the only freshman player among the Top 15 in field goal shooting.  VanArsdale scored a career-high 33 points vs. High Point on March 2, and had 29 in Hampton's win over CAA regular-season champion James Madison on Nov. 20.
