WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
Clara Smith recorded a team best 14 kills to go with a pair of digs and a pair of blocks as Hampton dropped a 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 decision at William & Mary on Friday night.
The first set saw a kill by
Alyah Barkley even the match at 6-all, before the Tribe went on a 10-3 run to lead 16-9 after a Maddie Meyers kill. Hampton trimmed the lead down to 23-19 after a Tribe attack error, but the hosts scored the next two points to win the opening set.
In the second set, Hampton jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead after a
Julieta Campana. That advantage grew to 19-10 following a service error by the Tribe. The hosts responded with an 11-2 run to tie the game at 21 after a Julia Brown kill. Smith recorded a kill for a 24-23 Hampton lead, but the hosts scored the final three points of the set for the win. Set three saw the Tribe never relinquish the lead and only had one tie.
Barkley added six kills and four digs, while
Gabby Calloway had five kills and eight digs.
Jessica Pugh was the leader in digs with nine, while Brooke Irvin had 17 assists.
Hampton now will visit Princess Anne, Md. for a one-day doubleheader on September 18 facing St. Francis (PA) at noon and host UMES at 4 pm.
