Qwahsin Townsel Named to Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List

HAMPTON, VA. (August 16, 2023) …The preseason accolades continue to roll in for Hampton linebacker Qwahain Townsel. On Monday the Egg Harbor, N.J. native was selected to the Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.

Townsel in his first season with the Pirates led the team with 100 total tackles in 2022 which was the third most in the CAA. Townsel is the only player to be selected from the Costal Athletic Association to the Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.

Since the creation of the Deacon Jones Trophy in 2016, the award has annually been presented to the most outstanding player from a Historically Black College & University. Candidates were selected based on previous performances and future potential for the upcoming 2023 season. Four finalists and the winner will be picked by a selection committee.

Hampton begins the 2023 campaign on Sept. 2 when the Pirates face Grambling State in Harrison N.J. A full list of the nominees can be found in the link below.
