Hampton, Va. (Sept. 18th. 2023) … The Hampton University Student Counseling Center is working in conjunction with the John Carlos Run 4 Humanity team to host the Move 4 Humanity event on Thursday, Sept. 21st – Saturday 23rd on the Hampton campus. Hampton Director of Track Field and Cross Country
Maurice Pierce will speak as a part of the One Love Panel on Thursday at 7 PM with Dr. John Carlos.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of suicide in college students, to honor those who have been impacted by suicide, and to commit to prioritizing
mental and emotional wellness throughout the semester.
Dr. John Carlos
John Carlos is recognized as one of the greatest and influential human rights activists in American history. Turmoil filled the United States in the 1960s and Carlos was a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic Track Team in Mexico. In the 200m, Carlos, along with fellow American Tommie Smith raised their fists on the podium in a silent protest due to the economic depression and racism the oppressed in America faced. This image quickly spread across the United States and became a symbol to fight for human rights. Dr. Carlos continues to make a positive impact in
the community along with striving to better humanity.
"John Carlos is a national treasure," said Pierce. "His medal ceremony stance during the 1968 Olympic Games is the greatest image of protest in the history of sports. His stance, beliefs, and intellect continue to be felt today. He is a hero and I am honored to be on this platform with him. It means a lot to my family, my team and me."
