Hampton Routs Regent Royals 108-65

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 17, 2024) … Hampton University (6-5) throttled Regent (1-9) 108-65 in the final home game for the Pirates before the Christmas holidays. The win was the Pirates third-in-a-row, matching Hampton's longest winning streak since Dec. 21-30, 2020.
The Pirates fell behind Regent 5-2 in the opening minutes before taking control. The Pirates reeled off 19 consecutive points to lead 21-5 with 8:06 left in the opening half. Regent's Christian Brown's trey snapped the Hampton streak before the Pirates scored 10 more points to pad the lead to 31-8. The first half lead grew to as many as 29 with 2:12 left in the half when Daniel Johnson scored a basket and made a free throw. Regent outscored the Prates 9-4 in the final 1:27 and Hampton led 49-25 at intermission.
Hampton's inside strength was on display with 30 first-half points and a 30-12 rebounding edge in the first half. Kyrese Mullen scored 14 points without missing a shot and grabbed seven boards in the opening 20 minutes. Richard Goods came off the bench to score nine points and Wayne Bristol Jr. finished the half with seven. Regent's Christian Brown had 12 first half points.
Hampton shot 51.4 percent from the field while limiting Regent to 26.5 percent accuracy in the opening period. The Pirate bench chipped in 33 points --- outscoring Regent --- in the first half.
Hampton's dominance continued into the second half. The Pirates scored 13 of the first 16 points of the second stanza to go ahead 62-28 with 15:50 left. The lead grew to 40, 81-41, on a Tyler Rice bucket with 9:03 to go.
The Royals were unable to mount a comeback and back-to-back-to-back treys by Etienne Strothers put Hampton ahead 95-55. Elijah Kennedy's three-pointer with 3:59 remaining made it 98-55. Hampton reached the 100-point plateau on a dunk by Enrique Dink with 3:10 left. Hampton enjoyed its largest lead, 49, with 1:23 remaining when Kennedy connected on a jumper to put the Pirates ahead 108-59. The Royals scored the game's final six points.
Hampton shot 56.6 percent for the game while limiting Regent to 32.9 shooting. The Pirates outrebounded the Royals 57-26 and canned 10, three-pointers on the night. The Pirate bench chipped in 65 points and Hampton scored 58 points in the paint.
Mullen registered a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Strothers finished with 13 points while Bristol Jr. (11) and Daniel Johnson (10) also scored double figures. Brown led the way for Regent with 23 points with Darrin Clark (14) Brendan Goods (11) also scoring double digits.
Hampton's three game winning streak is the longest since the Pirates reeled off a trio of wins from Dec. 21-30, 2020 with a pair of victories over Charleston Southern and a win at home over Gardner-Webb.
The Pirates return to action on Dec. 21 when Hampton plays on the road at Loyola (Md.) in the final game before Christmas.
