Pirates Continue Winning Ways Defeating Loyola 76-68

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 21, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team secures their seventh win of the season defeating Loyola 76-68. While the Pirates and Greyhounds battled early on, Coach Ivan Thomas's squad took the lead at the seven-minute mark and did not look back. Hampton only made three shots from beyond the arc but could convert their free throws throughout the game.

Loyola jumped out to an early advantage by getting on the board first hitting an early three. Wayne Bristol Jr. and Eunique Rink helped the Pirate's offense early on. Hampton had success in the paint and at the free throw line in the opening minutes. The Greyhounds held onto a one-point lead 9-8 heading into the first media timeout. 

Hampton took its first lead on the night at the 13:39 mark after Noah Farrakhan's layup. However, both sides continued to trade blows. Towards the the end of the half Coach Thomas's squad started to take control of the contest. Richard Goods and Etienne Strothers propelled the Pirate's strong run of form. Goods finished the game with 13 points off the bench while grabbing eight rebounds. Strothers would also finish the contest in double-figures with 14 points.

In the final minute of the first half, Loyola cut Hampton's lead down to three. The Pirates went three-for-four from the charity stripe to head into the half up six 32-26. 

Coming out of the half, Hampton held onto its lead built in the first 20 minutes. Both Bristol Jr. and Xzaiver Long got going early. Long would be the fourth Pirate to finish the game in double figures. The Pirates slightly grew their advantage to nine points after the under-16-minute media timeout. Throughout the second frame, Loyola brought it back to within a couple of possessions. Hampton continued to answer any advancement made by the Greyhounds. With 10:52 left on the clock, HU had its largest lead of the afternoon 52-41.

Down the stretch, Hampton was able to hit their free throws keeping the contest out of reach. The Pirates went 29-35 (82.9 percent) from the charity stripe. Bristol Jr. led Hampton in scoring with 21 points while going 7-for-14 from the field. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native, was also active on the glass with 10 rebounds securing his first double-double of the season.

Hampton returns to action on Dec. 28 against Howard inside the Convocation Center. The Pirates contest against the Bison will be nationally televised on CBS.
