Late Two Run Blast Lifts North Carolina A&T Past Hampton 4-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 30, 2024) … Hampton University softball team wrapped up its three-game series with North Carolina A&T.  While the Lady Pirates found themselves trailing early they found a way to take the lead in the fifth. However, the Aggies walked it off in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer.

Early on in the contest, Hampton was able to produce base runners early. In the top of the first, HU had runners on first and second with base knocks from Aitirhna Aiken and Emily Kepple. While the Aggies got the next out, the base runners would advance. Coach Monique White's squad eventually loaded the bases with Leah Maduro reaching first on a walk. The Aggies did get out of the jam holding HU scoreless.

In the bottom half of the frame, an early double helped North Carolina A&T strike first. N.C. A&T's Jamari Moss drove in the contest's first run on a single to center field. After the Aggies struck first, both sides were held scoreless for three innings. Freshman Taryn Bennett got the start for the Lady Pirates. Bennet went five frames while only giving up three hits.

Hampton after recording five hits in the first four innings finally got on the board in the fifth. Carmynn Bonner began the stanza with an infield single. With Aiken recording her second hot of the afternoon, HU had runners on first and second with no outs. Emily Kepple tied it up 1-1 with a single to right field. Later in the frame, Aiken would score on a passed ball giving the Lady Pirates a one-run advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies were able to get base runners early with back-to-back walks. HU's bullpen would respond with a strikeout for the first out of the frame. N.C. A&T took advantage of the early walks tying it up 2-2 with a single to center field. However, the Aggies walked it off during the next at-bat with a two-run homer.

Hampton softball returns to action Wednesday at Maryland Eastern Shore. Game one of Wednesday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
