Lady Pirates Fall in Game One to the Campbell Camels

HAMPTON, Va. (April 5, 2024) … The Lady Pirates began a three-game series with Coastal Athletic Association newcomer Campbell this afternoon. With the Camels bats catching fire in the third frame, Hampton fell to CU 12-0 in five innings. Carmynn Bonner recorded a hit in today's contest continuing her active hitting streak. 

Early on in the contest, Hampton was able to hold the Camels to two runs. In the bottom of the second, the Lady Pirates would have an early baserunner with Leah Maduro. The Freshman reached first on an error made by CU. Campbell quickly got out of the stanza stringing together three consecutive outs.

The Camels began the third stanza with a triple to right field. Before Hampton could record an out, CU recorded six consecutive hits. Over 50 percent of Campbell's hits came in the third frame. At the end of the stanza, the Camels jumped out to a 10-run advantage.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Pirates were able to produce another early baserunner. Carmynn Bonner reached first on an infield base knock. Campbell's Isabella Smith got her side out of the frame recording back-to-back strikeouts. Smith finished the day with a total of seven strikeouts in three innings pitched. 

Hampton had a strong opportunity to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With consecutive walks, HU had runners on first and second. Camryn Thompson would advance a runner to third with a fielder's choice. The Lady Pirates during the next at-bat hit into a double play ending the stanza. Before the end of the contest, the Camels brought in two more runs. 

The Lady Pirates resume the three-game series against Campbell tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
