HAMPTON, Va. (April 9, 2024) – The Lady Pirates tennis team (9-8) will travel up to Fairfax, Va. to face the George Mason Patriots at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. This will be the fourth time the teams have met, with the current record in favor of the Patriots 2-1.
Yesterday, Hampton posted a dominating performance over the Coppin State Eagles.
Mio Kozaki and
Lucia Jorrin Fernandez as well as
Diana Starodubtseva and
Masa Mitic won their doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Sofia Sokolova sealed the match with her singles win. The Eagles only had four athletes, leading to one doubles and two singles matches being forfeited.
So Far This Season
Meiri Okuwaki leads the Lady Pirates with a 9-5 record in singles play and is followed closely by Kozaki at 9-6. Mitic sits at 8-6 and Jorrin Fernandez and Starodubtseva each have seven wins. In doubles, Okuwaki and Sokolova hold a 9-3 record this spring and Starodubtseva and Kozaki are 6-5.
Scouting the Patriots
Stephen Curtis is in his 20th season coaching the Patriots. The team is currently 4-13, with wins over Mary Washington (5-2), North Carolina Wesleyan (5-2), Saint Francis (Pa.) (4-3), and St. Bonaventure (4-2). Cenan Li holds the best singles record for Mason at 4-5.
