Pirates Return to Conference Action Inside the Convocation Center

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 8, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team returns to the Convocation Center facing the Campbell Camels. Both squads won their Coastal Athletic Association openers. The Pirates contest against the Camels marks a three-game home stint. This will be Coach Ivan Thomas's first meeting against Campbell. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

In the most recent matchup, Hampton defeated Campbell 72-68 in Buies Creek, N.C. Dan Banister Jr. was the only current Pirates to play in the last meeting. Since joining the conference the two programs have only faced each other twice. Hampton has defeated Campbell inside the Convocation Center but it has not happened since both schools were members of the Big South. The Pirate's last home win came during the 2021-22 campaign in a close 68-66 battle. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

Hampton in its last time out fell to Elon at the Schar Center 70-62. The Pirates would take 23 more shots than the Phoenix but shot 36.2 percent. HU also won the rebound battle 40-33 over Elon and recorded 16 offensive rebounds. Daniel Johnson led Hampton in scoring with 15 points off the bench. Johnson has been the Pirates leading scorer in back-to-back contests. During this stretch, the Chicago, Ill. native, is averaging 18.5 points per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field. Johnson was announced the CAA Rookie of the Week on Dec. 30.

Coach Ivan Thomas's side continues to receive massive production from the bench. The Pirates are producing 40.2 points per game off the bench which is second in the nation and first in the conference. In 11 contests Hampton's leading scorer has come off the bench. Consistently the Pirates are winning the turnover battle with an average margin of 3.4. HU's turnover margin ranks 35th in the nation and is first in the CAA. Hampton has a record of 6-3 when they commit fewer turnovers than their opponent. 

ABOUT CAMPBELL

The Camels enter Thursday night's contest with a 1-1 record in the conference. Campbell is coached by Kevin McGeehan who is in his 12th season with the program.  Coach McGeehan has led his squad through the transition from the Big South to the CAA. While the Camels have not faced a ranked team, they have faced two sides that received votes in the AP Poll. 

Since the start of conference play Colby Duggan has been an offensive threat for the Camels. The Sophomore is averaging 20.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest against CAA opponents. In Campbell's win against Drexel, Duggan had a double-double tallying 19 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Sinani has also been a scoring option for the Camels. Through the opening weekend of conference play the Oak Creek, Wis. native, is producing 13 points per contest.
