Campbell's second half comeback foils Pirates

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 11, 2025) … Under threatening skies, Campbell (2-4, 2-1) outscored Hampton (2-5, 0-3) 28-7 in the second half to post a 38-21 come-from-behind victory over the Pirates before 3,358 fans at Armstrong Stadium.

Leading 14-10 at halftime, the Pirates saw the Camels score on their first two possessions of the second half and then intercept a pass and return it for another score. The trio of touchdowns put the Camels ahead 31-14 after three quarters. The two teams traded fourth quarter scores.

The Pirates managed just 17 yards in the opening quarter while the Camels amassed 123 yards. But neither team was able to break into the scoring column as the first quarter ended 0-0.

Campbell opened the scoring with a 33-yard field goal by Alex Crabb. On Hampton's next possession, the Pirates moved 75 yards in seven plays to take the lead. The big play was a 33-yard run by quarterback Braden Davis. Flushed from the pocket, Davis found daylight before being tackled at the Campbell 13-yard line. Two plays later, Gracen Goldsmith bulled in from three yards out to put the Pirates ahead 7-3 with 9:44 left before intermission.

Hampton's defense set the table for its next score. Cam Sturdifen's jarring tackle of Campbell running back Naieem Kearney forced a fumble which was picked up by Marcellus Nash who returned it to the Campbell 21-yard line. Four plays later, the Pirates scored when Davis connected with Maxwell Moss on a 10-yard strike to put the Pirates ahead 14-3 with 5:26 left in the second quarter.

Campbell wasted no time answering. A 34-yard pass from Mike Chandler II to Parker Jones put the Camels at the Pirate five-yard line. JJ Cowan's one-yard run up-the -middle with 1:15 left closed the gap to14-10 in favor of the Pirates at halftime.

The Camels gained 204 yards on 36 plays in the first half while limiting the Pirates to 113 yards on 23 plays. But the opportunistic Pirates turned a Campbell fumble into a touchdown to take a four-point lead into the locker room.

On Campbell's first possession of the second half, the Camels took the lead 17-14 marching 51-yards on six plays capped by Cowan's five-yard run with 9:33. On its next possession, Campbell drove 63 yards in four plays highlighted by Ethan Lawrence's 41-yard TD run to put the Campbell up 24-14. Campbell added another touchdown when Lakeem Davis intercepted a Hampton pass and ran it in for the score with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Hampton set up a score when Moss hauled in a pass from Davis and ran 64 yards to the Campbell eight-yard line. Gracen Goldsmith ran it in from three yards out to cut the deficit to 31-21 with 12:31 left in the contest. But that's as close as Hampton could get. Cowan, who would finish with 143 yards and three TDs on the day, broke loose for a 63-yard score with 1:42 left to make the final score 38-21.

Campbell finished with 426 total yards while limiting the Pirates to 207 yards. Hampton came into the game as the leading rushing team in the Coastal Athletic Association averaging 202.5 yards per game but managed just 76 yards on 39 totes against the Camels.
