Mutisya Smashes 5000 Meter Record To Highlight Day One Of CAA Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 26, 2025) … A Coastal Athletic Association Championship record in the women's 5000 meters by Peninah Mutisya highlighted Hampton University's day one action at the CAA Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.

As a team, the Pirates sit fourth in the standings with 32 points. Elon leads with 48.5, followed by Northeastern (46.5) and William & Mary (42).

"A solid day one for us, some got it done and unfortunately, some didn't, but we have a lot to be excited for going into day two," said Hampton Head Coach Maurice Pierce.

Mutisya blistered the previous record in winning the 5000 meters in 15:45.87. She won the race by almost 30 seconds over Mikayla Jones of Elon who ran 16:14.87. Her time broke the CAA record of 15:59.22 by Abigail Hassman of Northeastern set last year. That mark smashed the previous Hampton University record of 17:13.23 by Janet Okeago in 2017.

Hampton also scored points in the distance medley relay coming in sixth in 12:01.40 with Mekayla Wilson, Carmen PenaSoto, Kylee King and Jordan Mozie.

In the field events, Danielle James scored six points for Hampton with her third place finish in the long jump with a leap of 19-0.5.
