Hampton Rallies But Falls Short in Overtime against William & Mary

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 9, 2025) … In a back-and-forth game that saw 14 lead changes and eight ties, William & Mary (10-11, 7-3) outlasted Hampton (5-17, 1-10) 72-65 in overtime before 421 fans at the Hampton Convocation Center.

William & Mary seemingly had the game in hand and the Tribe leading 61-56 with 17 seconds left. Tiani Abrams hit canned a three from long range. Following a William & Mary turnover, Amyah Reaves passed to Clinton who drove the lane for a game-tying lay-up to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Tribe made seven free throws to post the win.

William & Mary hit its first four shots of the contest, including a pair of three-pointers, to take a 10-2 lead with 7:28 left in the opening quarter. Bella Nascimento led the way for the Tribe with eight points in the game's first five minutes. The Pirates battled back and trailed 16-11 at the end of the first quarter --- exactly the same score as the Jan. 3 meeting between the two teams.

Reaves started the second quarter off with a long three-pointer and Janae Dublin converted a free throw to make the score 16-15 a minute into the second period. A follow-up by Arlisha Boston put the Pirates ahead for the first time, 17-16, at the 7:41 mark. After trading the lead back-and-forth, William & Mary tallied seven consecutive points to lead 27-22. But the Pirates scored the quarter's final four points on a pair of free throws by Dublin and a bucket by Reaves to close to 27-26 at intermission.

Dublin scored seven points, five from the free throw line, to lead the Pirates. Reaves finished the half with six. William & Mary's Nascimento led all scorers with eight points. The Tribe shot 39.3 percent and the Pirates made 28.6 percent of their shots in the opening half.

The third quarter saw both teams make runs to lead only to see the other battle back. Hampton scored the first five points of the third quarter on a three-pointer by Clinton and two free throws by Aisha Dabo put the Pirates ahead 31-27. But the Tribe responded by scoring the game's next five points to retake the lead 32-31 with 8:03 left in the third quarter.

After two Hampton scores, William & Mary scored six consecutive points to lead 40-35. But the Pirates stormed back with a pair of Reaves free throws a layup by Le'Asia Foreman and another pair of free throws by Reaves to give Hampton a 41-40 lead. Following a Tribe basket, Dublin's basket and free throw out the Pirates ahead 44-42. Clinton pick-and-pay and, later her trey with :54 left in the quarter, gave Hampton a 49-44 lead. The Pirates led 49-45 after three quarters. Hampton shot 35 percent from the field in the third quarter but converted all seven free throw attempts. The Tribe shot 43.8 percent in the quarter.

Both teams struggled in the fourth period. Hampton went over five minutes without a score late in the fourth period and trailed by as many as five in the closing minute. But the last-minute Pirate heroics by Abrams and Clinton sent the game into overtime.

The Tribe's Nascimento led all scorers with 25 points with teammates Jana Sallman (11), Natalie Fox (11), and Kayla Rolph (10) all scoring double figures. Clinton led the Pirates with 17 points and Reaves scored a season-high 14 points. Janae Dublin tallied 10 points making 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

The Pirates return to action on Friday, Feb. 14, celebrating Valentine's Day at Stony Brook in a 12:00 p.m.  contest.
