Jasha Clinton goes 1-for-2 from the foul line with 22 seconds left and a resilient Hampton University women's basketball team withstood several flurries late from the Stony Brook Seawolves to came away with a 59-57 win at Stony Brook Arena on Friday afternoon.
Hampton (6-17, 2-10) got 13 points from
Le'Asia Foreman and 11 from
Aisha Dabo.
Jasha Clinton added nine and the duo of
Jenae Dublin and
Casey Miller matched her season-high with seven points.
Stony Brook pulled to 41-38 early in the fourth behind a Breauna Ware free throw, but the Pirates responded pushing the lead back to eight at 54-46 following a Foreman three-point play with 3:52 left.
Hampton saw the hosts chip away and get to 58-57 with 25 seconds left after a Shamarla King three-point play. Clinton responded with her free throw, but the fun wasn't done. Each team had a turnover in the final 20 seconds, and a baseline jumper from Lauren Filien went long and into the hands of Reaves to ice the win.
Aisha Dabo scored two of the first three buckets for Hampton with a mid-range jumper to start the game and a corner jumper to bring the Pirates to 7-6. Stony Brook pushed the lead back to 12-6 on a Zaida Gonzalez 3-ball with 5:43 on the clock. Dublin brought Hampton back even as she scored the next three field goals on a pair of layups and a turnaround jumper with 89 seconds left.
Clinton and Miller scored five points apiece in a second quarter that saw Hampton hold the hosts to a 2-for-11 performance from the field (18.2%).
Arlisha Boston got Hampton on the board in the second banking in a three-pointer from the top of the key to pull the Pirates to 20-16. Miller went 1-for-2 from line and then Clinton cracks the scoreboard with a three-ball from the wing to pull to 23-22 with 2:45 in the half.
Gonzalez gave the Seawolves a three-point lead again as she followed her own miss for a layup for a 25-22 margin. Clinton scored on a jumper and Miller was on the receiving end of a feed from
CeCe Thomas to take a 26-25 lead into halftime.
Stony Brook scored four quick points to start the third quarter and Hampton answered with buckets from Miller, Dabo and Reaves along with one and a pair of free throws from Foreman to lead 37-33.
That advantage grew to 41-33 on a pair of Foreman free throws with 2:24 left in the third. The Seawolves scored the last four points to trail 41-37 after three on a Ware free throw to end the third.
With her assist to Dabo for a three-pointer to take a 31-29 lead with 7:23 left, Reaves moved into the Hampton University All-Time Top 10 in Career Assists as she now has 260. For the day, Hampton had a season-high 19 assists on 22 made field goals. Hampton's bench outscored Stony Brook 42-4.
Hampton held Stony Brook to a 10-for-39 (25.6%) performance from the field in the final three quarters.
The Pirates now heads to West Long Branch, N.J. to face Monmouth on Sunday at 2 p.m.
