Pirates Begin North Carolina A&T Series With 3-2 Victory In Extra Innings

HAMPTON, Va. (April 25, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's side began its three-game series against the North Carolina A&T Aggies this afternoon. While the Pirates trailed for most of the contest, Hampton walked it off in the bottom of the ninth. All three runs in HU's 3-2 victory were unearned. Sophomore Kylie Hill was the only Pirate to record multiple hits this afternoon.

Hampton and North Carolina A&T were locked into a pitcher's duel for most of the contest. Both starters held the opposing team off the scoreboard. Leah Maduro got the start on the mound for the Pirates. The sophomore pitches seven innings while recording five strikeouts. Maduro's five strikeouts tied her career-high that was set against Bowie State.

The Aggies got on the board in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly. The Pirates had a strong opportunity to respond in the bottom half of the frame. After Meagan Ramos reached second on an error, she advanced to third on a stolen base. However, North Carolina A&T manufactured the third out to get out of the stanza.

The Aggies doubled their advantage in the top of the sixth. North Carolina A&T led off the frame with a single through the left side. An errant throw on a sacrifice bunt scored the leadoff hit. While the Aggies had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning. Hampton held North Carolina A&T scoreless.

Down to their last three outs, Hampton tied up the contest 2-2. Hill began the stanza with a base knock to the outfield. With one out on the board, the Pirates had runners on second and third. During Camryn Hamilton's at-bat, a fielding error brought both runs in. After the two runs came across the plate, the Aggies recorded consecutive outs to end the frame, sending the contest to extra innings.

Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth frame. The Pirates got the offense going in the bottom of the ninth. Amani Johnson recorded a base knock with one out. With two outs on the board, Aitirhna Aiken drew a walk, advancing Johnson to second. Leah Maduro produced a single in the infield. While the Aggie fielder was able to stop the ball from heading to the outfield, Johnson still came across the plate.
