Pirates to Host UNCW in Men's Hoops Action

Hampton will put its 11-game winning streak at the Convocation Center on Jan. 24 when the Pirates tackle UNCW. The winning streak is the longest in the CAA.

In his second season at the helm, Coach Ivan Thomas has made the Pirates a team to be reckoned with on its home court. The Pirates are 17-4 (.810) at home under his guidance with a 11-game winning streak at the Convocation Center.

Hampton closed out the 2024-25 campaign winning its last four home games and are 7-0 at home this season including four wins over conference foes.

The Pirates will be put to the test as they take on UNCW. The first-place Seahawks boast a 17-3 record with a 6-1 mark in CAA play.

The two teams have tangled on just five occasions with the Seahawks winning four. The Pirates are 1-1 versus UNCW at the Convocation Center, winning 83-70 on Feb. 22, 2025.

On Jan. 3, UNCW slipped past the Pirates 49-45 in Wilmington.

The Game
Picked to finish second in the preseason vote of the Coastal Athletic Association's coaches, UNCW (17-3, 6-1) have surprised the experts with its fast start and the Seahawks currently sit atop the league standings.

Despite a 77-70 loss at third-place (tie) William & Mary on Jan. 22, UNCW has proven to be the team to beat this year.

Hampton (10-10, 4-3) has won its last two games and boast an 11-game winning streak at the Convocation Center.

In his second season, Coach Ivan Thomas has led the Pirates to a 12-13 (.480) CAA worksheet. In Hampton's first two seasons in the league, the Pirates were just 8-26 (.235) in conference play.

The Pirates and Seahawks met on Jan. 3, 2026 with UNCW eking out a 49-45 win. Hampton's trademark has been a stingy, physical defense which was on display yielding just 49 points and holding UNCW to under .400 accuracy from the field.

Hampton's aggressive play on the defensive end has limited CAA opponents to just 64.9 points while holding five of seven opponents to 63 points or less.

Michael Eley leads the Pirates in scoring with a 13.2 average. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt has an 11.8 norm. With Gaines-Wyatt's driving style-of-play, he has 28 percent of Hampton's free throws including 9-of-10 in the 65-63 win over Monmouth. Xzavier Long leads the CAA in rebounding a 10.2 rpg.
