Late Run Sinks Pirates In Loss to Aggies

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 1, 2026) … A 9-2 burst from visiting North Carolina A&T in the late stages of the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Aggies defeated Hampton University 62-57 on Sunday night in a CAA matchup.

Hampton (9-12, 3-6) opened the game with a strong start as Kiki McElrath had five of the first seven points for the Pirates with her triple putting the hosts up 7-4 with six minutes left in the stanza. That advantage grew to 10-6 following a three-point play from Aisha Dabo one minute later. The Aggies used a three-ball from Anayta Karriem to close out the first quarter with a 15-14 advantage.

In a second period that saw four ties and two lead changes, a three-ball from Tiani Abrams gave the Pirates a 22-21 lead with 4:45 on the clock. That turned out to be the last lead for the Pirates on the night, but Hampton made things very entertaining.

Four times in the second half, the Pirates cut deficits to even but couldn't break through and gain an advantage. N.C. A&T (8-12, 3-6) took a pair of seven-point leads in the third quarter, the last being after a pair of Chaniya Clark free throws to hold a 41-34 advantage at the 4:24 mark of the third. McElrath scored the next five points for the Pirates to trim the deficit to 41-39 just 80 seconds later.

The Aggies held a five-point lead late in the third, but McElrath hit a step back jumper to pull Hampton to 46-43 heading into the fourth.

The Pirates pulled even on three occasions in the fourth, the last being on a Dabo putback with 5:51 left for a 50-50 score. That started the 9-2 burst for the Aggies as a Paris Locke bucket with 55 seconds left gave the guests a 59-52 lead. The Aggies went 3-for-4 from the line in the final minute to ice the game.

McElrath had a game-high 23 points, while Lezama added 11. Dabo chipped in eight points and seven boards, while Foreman had six points, seven boards, three assists and two steals.
Hampton is now on the road next weekend starting in Philadelphia on Friday night taking on Drexel at 6 p.m.
