A former Pirate signal caller himself, Roy Johnson is in his second season as a member of the Hampton University coaching staff where he will serve as quarterbacks coach.
Johnson returns to HU after spending the past two years as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Meadowcreek High School in Georgia. There he led a Mustang offense that averaged more than 300 yards of total offense per game utilizing the Wing-T and the Veer option. In addition, Johnson helped more than 20 Mustangs receive athletic scholarships to continue their careers at four-year institutions.
Prior to his stint at Meadowcreek, Johnson served as the co-offensive coordinator/pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. In his four seasons with the program he assisted in guiding the Raiders to a state playoff birth for the first time four years.
Johnson is a 1999 graduate of Hampton University, earning his bachelor’s degree in business management. As a player Johnson led the Pirates to consecutive MEAC championships in 1997 and 1998. He is second all-time at Hampton in passing yards (7,086) and completions (502), while ranking fourth in touchdown passes with 45.
