Longtime Hampton associate head coach, Darryl Sharp came to Hampton in 2009 and is entering his 15th season as a member of coach Edward Joyner’s staff. He is in his 14th year as associate head coach. Sharp oversees recruiting, scouting and manages the team’s academics.
 
Sharp began his coaching career in the scholastic ranks as an assistant coach at Washburn High in Minneapolis, Minn. and was an assistant with Team Howard Pulley (1997-98), the top AAU program in Minnesota. Sharp moved into the collegiate ranks as an administrative assistant for Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum at Louisville for two seasons. He moved to Norfolk State where he was responsible for arranging recruiting visits and developing prospect lists as well as handling film exchange and improvement drills during the off-season.

After a season at Norfolk State, Sharp spent two seasons at Iowa State working under head coach Wayne Morgan. In his first season, he served as the director of basketball operations where he coordinated recruiting, academic progress and numerous administrative duties for the Cyclone program. The following year, he was promoted to assistant coach. Iowa State posted a 39-25 record during Sharp’s tenure. In 2003-04, Iowa State advanced to the NIT semifinals while posting a 17-1 record at Hilton Coliseum. The following season, the team earned an NCAA Tournament berth, defeating Minnesota in the opening round.

A 1990 graduate of Bloomsburg where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, he spent time as a broker for Robert W. Baird and US Bank before moving into the coaching ranks.
