Turnovers send Pirates to fourth straight loss

Richmond, Va. – Jesse Pellot-Rosa scored a career-high 20 points and Virginia Commonwealth took advantage of 30 Hampton turnovers to defeat the Pirates 74-51 in a non-conference matchup Saturday night at Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center in Richmond.

Over the final eight minutes of the first half, the Rams outscored Hampton 16-6, forcing seven turnovers and taking a 38-26 lead into the half.

VCU started the second half on a 17-5 run as the Rams pushed their lead to 24 points at 55-31 with 13:30 remaining. After Hampton forward Theo Smalling’s jumper at the 18:25 mark, the Pirates went without a field goal for the next 13 minutes before forward Michael Freeman’s put-back ended the drought with 5:29 to go.

Freeman led the Pirates with 19 points seven rebounds and two steals, as the only Hampton player in double figures.

In addition to Pellot-Rosa’s 20 points, the Rams also got a season-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from Eric Maynor.
