Dover, Del. – Delaware State’s Jahsha Bluntt showed why he was the MEAC preseason Player of the Year, making six three-pointers and scoring 24 points to lead the Hornets to a 75-64 victory over visiting Hampton Saturday afternoon. And when Blount wasn’t hitting from the outside the Pirates were hurting themselves with one of their 22 turnovers. The win was the Hornets’ sixth in the last seven meetings against Hampton which fell to 6-11, 3-4 in the MEAC.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead on a three-pointer by Vincent Simpson and a basket by Rashad West, but Bluntt made his first three-pointer to put the Hornets (9-9, 6-0 MEAC) in front 10-9 and they would never look back.
With 4:47 remaining in the first half the score stood at 29-25 Delaware State following a three-point play by West, but the Hornets proceeded to go on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to take command of the game. Roy Bright got things going with a jumper in the lane, while Troy Roundtree and Bluntt added two baskets apiece to give the Hornets a 43-30 halftime lead.
The Hornets had their largest lead of the game, 73-53, with just over three minutes remaining before the Pirates closed the game on an 11-2 run to provide the final margin.
West and Mike Freeman led the Pirates with 15 points apiece, while Bluntt got help from Roundtree and Bright who scored 14 each.
