Orangeburg, S.C. – Brian Mason led six South Carolina State players in double figures with 16 points as the Bulldogs outscored Hampton 42-25 in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak to the Pirates with a 74-63 victory on Saturday.
Down 38-32 at the half, the Bulldogs outscored Hampton 14-8 in the first 10 minutes of the second half to knot the game at 46 apiece. From there it was all South Carolina State and the inside play of Mason and Julius Carter who scored 10 of his 13 points in the final nine minutes.
A three-pointer by Hampton’s Rashad West with just over eight minutes to play made the score 51-49 South Carolina State, but a breakaway reverse dunk by Robert Baker sparked a 15-5 run to the put the Pirates away for good
The Pirates turned the ball over 24 times on the night, 13 in the second half where they shot just .308 (8-for-26) from the field after shooting 56% in the first half. And with three Hampton starters sidelined for much of the game with foul trouble, the Bulldogs took advantage by going inside and outscoring the Pirates 32-16 in the paint.
West finished with a game-high 24 points leading the Pirates in scoring for the 11th time this season, including six straight. Demario Mattox added 15 off the bench for Hampton with three three-pointers late in the game.
In addition to Mason’s 16 the Bulldog got 14 points apiece from Travis Jones and Derrick Davis. South Carolina State also scored 27 points off of the 24 Pirates turnovers and made 25-of-28 free throw attempts.
