Hampton falls 77-71 to Kent State

Kent, Ohio – Despite scoring 52 points in the second half the Pirates of Hampton University (1-2) were not able to hold off the Golden Flashers of Kent State University (1-1) who held the Pirates to just 19 points in the first half. Down by as many as 18 points at one point in the second half the Pirates continued to battled back throughout the game.
 
Hampton went the first six minutes without a field goal in which time the Golden Flashers went on a 6-0 run to start the game before Vincent Simpson made a three pointer to put the Pirates in the mix.
 
Hampton only shot 25% from the floor and 20% from beyond the three point arc in the first half. The Golden Flashers shot 45.5% from the floor and scored 30 points to go into the half with a lead of 30-19 over the Pirates.
 
The Pirates got things moving in the second half as they dropped 52 points and shot a blistering 52.8% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the three point arc.
 
The Pirates were led by sophomore guard Simpson who scored 22 points, with 14 coming in the second half alone, and senior guard Rashad West, who had 20 points for the Pirates with 16 in the second half. Also chipping in with double digits for the Pirates was Michael Freeman with 12 points and had five rebounds for the Pirates. The Golden Flashers were led by Mike McKee and Rashad Woods, who had 16 points apiece in the contest.
 
Hampton scored 26 points in the paint, 27 points off 23 Golden Flashers turnovers, and 26 points off the bench. The Pirates shot 40.6% from the floor and 61.9% from the charity stripe on the night.
