Box Score
Baltimore, Md. – Rashad West scored 28 points, including 19 in the second half, leading Hampton to its fifth straight victory, a 71-56 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Coppin State on Monday in the Coppin Center.
West, the leading scorer in the MEAC, was 5-of-6 from the field in the second half after shooting just 1-of-7 from the floor in the first period. He also was 12-of-16 from the free throw line and added four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Behind the hot shooting of West, Hampton shot a blistering 61.1 percent from the floor in the second half.
The showdown between the top scorers in the MEAC never materialized as Hampton (12-12, 8-5 MEAC) held Coppin State’s Tywain McKee to eight points on 3-of-10 shooting.
West keyed an 8-0 run to begin the second half by scoring five points as the Pirates opened a 38-28 lead with 17:41 remaining in the contest.
Coppin State (7-17, 5-7 MEAC) would trim the margin to 45-40 on a pair of free throws by Antwan Harrison, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get for the remainder of the contest.
West answered the two free throws with a three-point basket and Matthew Pilgrim followed with a dunk to increase the Hampton lead to 50-40 with 10:54 left in the game.
Michel Freeman added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Pilgrim scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Brian Chesnut led Coppin State with a career-high 17 points, but was the only Eagle to reach double figures in scoring. McKee finished with eight points, five rebounds and two steals.
