Box Score
Wilmington, N.C. – Maggie Wolfe and Jennifer Gonzales each homered for the second consecutive game and combined to drive in five of Hampton’s nine runs, leading the Lady Pirates to a 9-5 win over Charleston Southern at the Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC – Wilmington.
Gonzales wasted little time getting things started, hitting a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the first scoring Tesara Liggins who led off the inning with a walk.
In the third Hampton added two more runs when Brittany Davis doubled off of CSU starter Caitlin Allen to start the inning. Wolfe followed with a home run to center to give the Lady Pirates a 4-0 cushion.
Liggins and Leslie Hooks each singled to open the fourth inning for Hampton and each stole a base to give the Lady Pirates two runners in scoring position. Hooks crossed the plate thanks to an error by Bucs catcher Jillian LaFrance and Wolfe doubled to score Liggins and increase the HU lead to 6-0.
The Bucs finally got into the scoring column in the fifth when they scored three off of Lady Pirate starter Amanda Black. Jennifer Brooks doubled to drive in a run and Megan Hall’s sacrifice fly to left scored Brooks from third. LaFrance made up for her error earlier in the game with an RBI triple down the right field line to cut the Hampton lead in half at 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Bucs their effort in the top half of the inning was nullified when Hampton responded with three runs of its own. Jada Jeffries doubled to open the inning and eventually scored on a CSU error and Liggins’ two-run single stretched the Lady Pirates’ lead back to 9-3.
CSU managed to add two more runs in their final at bat, but it wasn’t enough as the Bucs fell to 3-8, while Hampton improved to 5-1.
