Box Score
Hampton, Va. – Hampton walk-on Kevin Sumner came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points behind five three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough as the resurgent Aggies of North Carolina A&T (14-15, 10-7 MEAC) extended their winning streak to three games with a 79-76 win at Hampton (13-15, 9-8 MEAC). Greg Roberts led three Aggies in double figures with 16 points, while Austin Ewing and Jason Wills poured in 15 apiece to give North Carolina A&T its first win at Hampton since 1998.
The Aggies took an early 2-0 lead on a layup by Jason Wills and led for the remainder of the first half thanks to some hot shooting by Austin Ewing and several trips to the free throw line. Ewing went 3-for-3 from behind the arc and North Carolina A&T was 10-of-14 from the charity stripe, eventually building a 13-point lead just before the half. However, walk-on Kevin Sumner helped the Pirates go on a 7-0 run, capping it with a three-pointer just before the buzzer to cut the deficit to 33-27 at the break.
Steven Rush nailed a three-pointer from the corner with 16:07 remaining to put the Aggies ahead 41-32, but Sumner came alive to lead the Pirates back within striking distance. He hit a three from the top of the key to spark a 10-2 Hampton run which cut the North Carolina A&T lead to one at 43-42.
His third three-pointer of the second half gave the Pirates their first lead of the game at 53-52, but the Aggies answered with a free throw from James Porter and a jumper by Roberts.
The game see-sawed back and fourth from that point on with North Carolina A&T going up 63-59 before another Sumner three-pointer produced the sixth tie of the period at 70-70 with 2:21 to play.
The Aggies made it a point to attack the basket in the final two minutes and consequently they made their way to the free throw line where Ewing put them up 75-71 with a pair from the line. Rashad West countered with a driving layup for the Pirates, but two more free throws and a breakaway dunk by Wills sealed the game for the Aggies.
