Norfolk, Va. – Jennifer Gonzales hit her second career grand slam in game one and Ashley Weissenbach tossed a complete game shutout in game two to lead the Lady Pirates of Hampton University to a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State Tuesday afternoon. Hampton (7-4) won game one 4-2 before blanking the Spartans 2-0 in the nightcap.
The Spartans (0-5) appeared ready to take an early lead in the bottom of the first when Micki Rodriguez doubled followed by consecutive walks to Hitomi Greene and Jennifer Morrison to load the bases. However, Hampton starter Amanda Black reared back and threw three past Leekycia Brown to end the NSU threat.
Junior Brittany Davis got things started for Hampton in the top of the third with a single to left. Leslie Hooks followed with a two-out single of her own bringing the reigning MEAC Player of the Year Maggie Wolfe to the plate. The Spartans intentionally walked Wolfe on four pitches loading the bases for Gonzales. The senior catcher made NSU regret its decision by blasting an Alyssa Velazquez offering over the fence in center field for her fifth home run of the season and a 4-0 Lady Pirate lead.
Black (4-1) cruised into the sixth inning having allowed just one hit, but the Spartans made a game of it with two runs in the bottom half of the frame. Greene singled to right to score Rose Spracklin and Morrison promptly brought Greene around with a base hit to left field. Yet once again Black came up with another strikeout to end the Spartan rally.
In game two the Lady Pirates got all of the runs they would need with a two-run double by Maggie Wolfe in the top of the fifth.
Sophomore hurler Ashley Weissenbach (1-0) turned in her best effort of the season thus far for Hampton pitching a complete game shutout, surrendering just three hits and striking out seven.
Hampton returns to the diamond this Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. when the Lady Pirates play host to Howard.
