Farmville, Va. – Longwood scored five unearned runs in game one and got an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh in game two, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Hampton University Lady Pirates Sunday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville, Va. With the pair of losses the Lady Pirates fell to 17-8, while the host Lancers evened their mark at 12-12.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game behind Jennifer Gonzales’ solo home run in the second and a sacrifice fly by freshman Jada Jeffries in the third, scoring Tesara Liggins from third.
However, things fell apart defensively for Hampton over the next two innings. With two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, Longwood’s Kaitlyn McKeown singled scoring two runs to knot the game at two runs apiece. The Lancers added two more runs when Hampton third baseman Maggie Wolfe couldn’t handle a grounder off the bat of Rachel Mills.
In the fifth inning an error by Lady Pirates right fielder Leslie Hooks allowed leadoff batter Caitlin Hooe to reach third base. Camille Ketsdever followed with an RBI single to center and the Lancers increased their lead to 5-2. Ryan Washington and Amy Betterton each drove in a run before the Lady Pirates could stop the bleeding, and at the end five innings Hampton was staring at a 7-2 deficit.
Liggins singled home a run in Hampton’s final at bat, but that was as close as the Lady Pirates would get.
Longwood struck first in game two when Ryan Washington homered off of Hampton starter Amanda Black in the bottom of the first inning.
Hampton answered in its next at bat when Evelyn Garcia and Angela Balser opened with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Black and scored when Longwood shortstop Washington could not field a Liggins’ grounder.
Another defensive miscue by the Lady Pirates allowed the Lancers to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, and after Hampton couldn’t score in their final at bat, the stage was set for Longwood to earn the victory.
Once again, after getting the first two outs the Lady Pirates failed to get the final out needed to send the game into extra innings. With runners on first and second Ketsdever drove an offering from Black into right field, scoring the runner from second and giving the Lancers the 3-2 edge. This was the second time in two days and the third time this season that Hampton has lost a game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
