Hampton, Va. – Senior Maggie Wolfe went 5-for-8 with two home runs, scored six runs and registered five RBIs to lead the Lady Pirates of Hampton University to a sweep of Coppin State in a MEAC softball matchup Tuesday afternoon. Hampton won the first game 11-0 and game two 11-2 improving to 19-8 on the year, while the Lady Eagles remained winless at 0-13.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning behind a pair of two-run singles from freshman Jada Jeffries and Jennifer Gonzales. Hampton added three more runs in its next at bat with Syreeta Brooks getting things started with her first collegiate hit, a solo home run to left-center. Tesara Liggins followed with a blast of her own over the left field fence and Angela Balser drove in the final run of the inning on a fielder’s choice to give the Lady Pirates a 7-0 cushion after just two at bats.
The duo of Brooks and Liggins led off the third inning as well with a double and a triple and Brittany Davis made it three consecutive hits and a 9-0 Hampton lead. An error by Coppin State catcher Christen Glascoe allowed two more Lady Pirate runs to cross the plate, providing the final 11-0 margin.
Hampton pounded out 16 hits in game one with Liggins going 4-for-4 and Brooks 3-for-3. On the mound Amanda Black (10-4) had little trouble making her way through the Coppin State lineup as she surrendered just three hits and posted her third shutout of the season.
In game two it wasn’t the Lady Pirate bats that did most of the damage, but the pitching woes of the Coppin State starter Glascoe. In just three innings pitched she walked eight Hampton batters and allowed nine runs. When the Lady Pirate bats were connecting it was Maggie Wolfe making her presence known most. The reining MEAC Player of the Year finished game two 2-for-4 with five RBIs thanks to a pair of two-run homers and a fielder’s choice that led to another run.
The Lady Eagles did manage to score two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Nicole Buchko that scored Melissa Bell who led off the inning with a double to center. An RBI double by Melissa Robinson drove in Coppin State’s other run, but that was all the Lady Eagles could muster against Hampton’s Jada Jeffries.
Jeffries improved to 4-3 on the year after pitching five innings and surrendering just three hits.
