Hampton’s sophomore hurler Black shuts down Florida A&M

The Lady Pirates went 5-0 at this weekend's MEAC Roundup

Box Score

Columbia, S.C. – Senior Maggie Wolfe drove in three runs and Amanda Black pitched a two-hit shutout as the Lady Pirates of Hampton University completed their sweep of this weekend’s MEAC Roundup with a 9-0 victory over Florida A&M (13-38, 5-6 MEAC). Hampton was a perfect 5-0 against teams from the MEAC’s southern division, recording three shutouts along the way.

The Lady Pirates (24-8, 9-0 MEAC) got on the board first in the top of the second when Evelyn Garcia singled, stole and was driven in by Angela Balser with a single to left field. Balser advanced to third on the play as Florida A&M left fielder Nakendra Jones attempted to throw out Garcia at the plate. Unfortunately that put Balser in perfect position to score from third on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Amanda Black.

Hampton erupted for six runs in the third despite having just three hits, as the Lady Pirates took advantage of some control problems by the Lady Rattler pitchers. Wild pitches accounted for two runs to start the rally and Maggie Wolfe ended it giving Hampton an 8-0 lead with a two-run single scoring Brittany Davis and Tesara Liggins, both of whom walked earlier in the inning.

Wolfe added her third RBI of the game in the fifth to provide the final margin.

Black improved to 14-4 on the year, striking out four and squandering just two hits over five innings.
