Dover, Del. – Sophomores Amanda Black and Ashley Weissenbach both pitched complete game shutouts, while a host of Lady Pirates supplied the offensive power as Hampton (27-9) swept Delaware State (17-24) 9-0 and 10-0 in an MEAC softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The leading candidate for MEAC Pitcher of the Year honors, Black registered her fourth shutout in her last five starts during game one, allowing just two hits and striking out five as she lowered her ERA to 1.67 on the year. Saturday’s performance marked the seventh time this season that she’s limited the opposition to less than three hits, helping her improve to 16-4.
Maggie Wolfe, Jada Jeffries and Angela Balser each drove in two runs in the first game with Wolfe and Jeffries each recording two-run singles, while Balser added a two-run double in the top of the sixth to spearhead a five-run inning.
In game two the Lady Pirates put things away with nine runs on nine hits in the third inning. Hampton batted around with shortstop Evelyn Garcia driving in two runs with a double to left-center and Brittany Davis contributing with a two-run double of her own. Davis finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.
On the mound Weissenbach mirrored Black’s performance to earn her sixth win (6-2) of the season as she surrendered just three singles and struck out three.
