McCORORY TAKES NCAA TITLE IN 400 METERS

Title is the third in school history.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Hampton University junior Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) won the 400-meter dash Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at the McFerrin Track & Field Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.

McCorory ran a 51.55 in the finals to take her first NCAA title. She beat Texas A&M's Jessica Beard by .22 seconds. No other competitor was within a second of McCorory and Beard.

McCorory ran a 53.54 in her preliminary heat on Friday.

Her time is a school record, a track record, an all-time personal best and a new national best. McCorory held the previous season best, a 52.06 she ran back in February at the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

McCorory is the second Hampton athlete to win an NCAA track title. Former Lady Pirate Yvette Lewis won the first in 2006, taking the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Lewis won the event again during the 2007 outdoor season..

Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran in the 200-meter dash on Friday, coming in 10th in the preliminary round with a time of 21.11. It was his second-best time in the event during the indoor season.

Tennessee won the women's team title with 42 points, while Oregon scored 56 points to win the men's title.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will open the 2009 outdoor season this weekend, as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the Wake Forest Open.
